Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College men’s, women’s cross-country dominate WSC preview

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Preview: Glendale roared to its fifth victory of the season in Friday afternoon’s conference preview at the Kern County Soccer Complex in Bakersfield.

GCC defeated second-place College of the Canyons, 26-73, as the Vaqueros placed their scoring five inside the top nine, led by second-place Leana Setian, who finished the 5-kilometer race in 18 minutes 34.52 seconds.

Glendale’s next three runners packed together to take spots four through six.

Giselle Masedo was fourth in 18:45.53, Angelica Salas was fifth in 18:55.86 and Fiona Faulkner was sixth in 19:05.97.

Rounding out the scoring five at ninth was Fabiola Naranjo (19:16.25).

Glendale has won 11 straight WSC titles and will no doubt be the favorite going into the conference championship Oct. 21 at Oxnard College.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Western State Conference Preview: The Vaqueros dominated to the tune of a near-perfect score on Friday afternoon at Bakersfield’s Kern County Soccer Complex, with Alejandro Ambrossio winning in 21 minutes 0.95 seconds to start a parade of GCC’s scoring five finishing in the top six spots for a victory with 17 points.

Ventura finished a distant second with 95 points.

Vaqueros took the first three spots, with Ambrossio winning and Luis Celaya following at second in 21:01.48 with Shane Thompson clocking 21:01.95 for third place.

Paulo Vazquez finished fifth in 21:20.35 and Raymond Lopez was sixth in 21:23.63.

GCC is looking to stop College of the Canyons’ three-year reign as WSC champs. The Vaqueros will have their shot on Oct. 21 in Oxnard.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Ventura College 3, Glendale Community College 0: The visiting Vaqueros lost on Friday night in a nonconference match, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.

Host Glendale (3-12) saw L.A. Mission record a 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 nonconference win Wednesday.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley in Villa Park Classic: Crescenta Valley lost a pair of matches in tournament play on Friday, falling against South Pasadena, 9-4, and against Del Oro, 13-11.

Against South Pas, Hakop Artsvelian had 11 saves, while Bodoe Wyss had two goals and Donovan Ynda and Tzanimir Borovski had a goal each.

Kurtis McNevin had three goals against Del Oro, while Wyss, Joe Langley and Matthew Ynda had two each. Borovski and Rouben Saakian also scored.

Crescenta Valley posted a 14-10 nonleague win against El Segundo on Wednesday at Pasadena City College. Reegan Hesse finished with eight goals, Ynda collected two and Artsvelian collected nine saves.
