Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College women’s cross-country wins again

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at San Bernardino Valley Invitational: For the sixth time in seven races, the Vaqueros claimed a victory, this time at San Bernardino Valley College on Friday morning.

It wasn’t just another win, but another blowout as Glendale topped College of the Canyons, 23-70, while Los Angeles Harbor came in third with 84 points.

Vaqueros sophomore Giselle Masedo finished second in 18 minutes, 00.11 seconds, just behind winner Jessica Ruiz (17:58.61) of Canyons.

Leana Setian took third for Glendale in 18:04.56, while Fiona Faulkner (fifth, 18:12.51), Fabiola Naranjo (sixth, 18:14.12) and Angelica Salas (seventh, 18:20.88) finished out the scoring for Glendale.

The Vaqueros are six for six in community college-only races with their only non-victory coming in the Mark Covert Classic, where the team raced against university squads.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at San Bernardino Valley Invitational: For a seventh time this year, the Vaqueros placed in the top five at an invitational, placing second at San Bernardino Valley College on Friday morning.

The Vaqueros were just nipped by host San Bernardino, 30-36, while Cerritos College was a distant third (92).

Glendale crossed its top three through the first six spots with sophomore Shane Thompson leading the way by taking third (20:30.39), just ahead of teammates Luis Celaya (fourth, 20:31.07) and Alejandro Ambrossio (sixth, 20:33.29).

Justin Villagran (10th, 20:59.90) and Glendale High alumnus Paulo Vazquez (13th, 21:09.78) closed out the scoring for the Vaqueros.

San Bernardino’s Luis Ortega won the race in 19:58.36.
