GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 53, Hoover 15: It was a runaway victory for the Nitros in city rivalry and Pacific League action Friday afternoon.

Senior Sylvia Vartazarian was one of three Nitros (13-8, 4-2 in league) in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Junior Lilia Vasghanian added 12 points for Glendale, which received 10 points from Jillian Yanai.

Glendale led, 19-0, after one quarter in a rare breather for Nitros Coach Tadeh Mardirosian.

“I like the way we came out and played and give credit to Hoover because they played hard,” Mardirosian said. “Now it’s the second half of league and we’re a team that has the ability to win a league title and we can also miss the playoffs entirely. We’re going to need to focus.”

Lisette Cuza led Hoover (1-16, 0-6) with five points.
