Sports Roundup: Hoover boys’ basketball nets first win of season
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Hoover in El Monte Tournament: The Tornadoes picked up their first victory of the season on Friday against South Pasadena, 59-46, led by Angel Mino’s 22 points.
Hoover (1-2) fell Wednesday against Verbum Dei, 81-78. The Tornadoes got 31 points, nine rebounds and three assists from Angel Mino and 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks from Simeon Hilby.
On Tuesday, Hoover suffered a 92-51 tournament loss against L.A. University. Mino had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Davit Pirjanyan had 15 points.
St. Monica Academy 38, Southwestern Academy 37: The season opener Tuesday was also the International League opener for the Crusaders, who won on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Jacob Lessard.
St. Monica trailed by 10 with just over three minutes remaining, but rallied. Since Southwestern Academy is a boarding school, some league games were moved up to accommodate the school’s schedule.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Flintridge Prep 61, La Salle 44: Visiting Flintridge Prep tipped off its season Tuesday with a nonleague victory. Renae Tamura had 22 points for the Rebels, who got 14 from Kaitlyn Chen and 10 from Taylor Yoshida.
Village Christian 45, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 26: Flintridge Sacred Heart started its season Tuesday with a nonleague defeat. The Tologs got seven points from Janna deVera.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Hoover 4, Monrovia 1: Hoover began its season Monday with a nonleague home victory. The Tornadoes got three goals from Jesus Rodriguez and one from Romio Sislian.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Glendale Community College 73, Pasadena City College 59: Serigne Athj finished with 31 points and nine rebounds Tuesday to lift the host Vaqueros (3-2) in a nonconference contest.
Dom Gully collected 19 points for Glendale, which received 12 from Jordan Matthews.
