Sports Roundup: Hoover High boys’ water polo wins South Bay tourney in OT

Hoover at South Bay Tournament: It was a first-ever South Bay Tournament championship for the Tornadoes, who won the crown on Saturday afternoon.
Hoover (17-4) went 5-0 through the two-day tournament as the squad outlasted Mira Costa, 7-6, in overtime in the championship contest.
Levon Tarverdov scored the game-tying goal in overtime, while David Ashkharian netted the game-winner in sudden death.
Goalie Jonathan Salandi finished with 17 saves and was named the tournament most valuable player.
Saturday’s title came in Hoover’s second-ever finals appearance as the squad lost to Loyola in 1991.
Hoover defeated Redondo Beach, 16-6, in Saturday morning’s quarterfinal behind four goals from Levon Gukasyan before topping Palos Verdes, 15-9, in the afternoon semifinal thanks to six goals from Levon Haik Gukasyan.

Santa Monica City College 3, Glendale Community College 0: Glendale lost its Western State Conference South Division opener on Friday night, 25-20, 25-19, 25-15.
GCC (3-15) lost its sixth match in a row.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
L.A. Pierce College 5, Glendale Community College 0: The Vaqueros lost for the third straight game, all via shutout.
The defeat on Friday dropped GCC to 2-7-3, 0-2 in Western State Conference South Division play.
