Sports Roundup: St. Francis High basketball, Wolfson pick up win against Chaminade

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Francis 48, Chaminade 44: After coaching at Chaminade and leading the Eagles to CIF Southern Section and state success between 2008-15, Todd Wolfson found himself at the other end of the court Friday night as head coach of St. Francis.

It proved to be a successful night for St. Francis, which rallied from a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to pick up a Mission League home win.

“It was a little strange and a different kind of experience,” said Wolfson, who got 14 points from John Stephens. “Everybody that was on the floor, I coached at one time.

“Our guys played very well and it’s a huge win. They really stepped up their game.”

St. Francis improved to 6-11, 2-4 in league.

Flintridge Prep 69, Firebaugh 56: Andrew Tsangeos had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Dante Fregoso collected 19 points, 14 rebounds and six assists to spark the Rebels to a Prep League road win. Flintridge Prep improved to 13-3, 5-0 in league.

St. Monica Academy 63, Calvary Baptist 36: The Crusaders notched an International League home win on Friday night.

St. Monica improved to 6-11, 2-2 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 65, Arcadia 41: It was a fifth straight rivalry victory for the Falcons over the Apaches in Pacific League action Friday evening in La Crescenta.

Senior center Alisa Shinn paced the Falcons (13-8, 6-1) with a game-high 16 points as Crescenta Valley remained in the hunt for a league title.

“It’s always special to beat Arcadia, our rival, it never gets old,” Shinn said. “I thought our passing was really strong tonight, our defense was real tough. It was a nice win.”

Polin Megerdichian added 12 points for Crescenta Valley, while Josie Brock was the last of three Falcons to score in double figures with 10 points.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 49, Immaculate Heart 18: Casey Johnson finished with 12 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark in her career to lead the host Tologs in a Sunshine League home game Friday.

Flintridge Sacred Heart improved to 16-6, 3-1 in league.

St. Monica Academy 48, Calvary Baptist 4: The Crusaders won in an absolute rout on Friday at home.

The International League win pushed St. Monica to 10-4, 3-0 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 3, Arcadia 2: Henry Barkhordarian scored the game-tying and game-winning goal in the second half as the Falcons rallied Friday at home for a Pacific League rivalry win.

Trailing, 2-0, in the first half, Crescenta Valley halved the deficit off an Augi Ahn score on the way to improving to 5-8-5, 2-5-1 in league.

The Falcons also got two assists from Joshua Moran and one from Eric Ginosian.

St. Francis 1, Chaminade 1: The Golden Knights finished in a Mission League home tie Friday. St. Francis is 3-7-4, 1-2-3 in league.

Firebaugh 3, Flintridge Prep 2: The visiting Rebels suffered a Prep League defeat Friday at Lynwood High.

Flintridge Prep (7-2-2, 1-1 in league) got eight saves from goalkeeper Hamilton Evans and two goals from Garrett Gaines.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 7, Chadwick 3: Scoring four goals in the first half, the Rebels rolled to a Prep League road victory Friday afternoon. Helen Schaeffer finished with three goals and Julia Gonzalez added two goals and three assists.

With the win, Flintridge Prep improved to 9-1-5 overall and 4-0 in league.

Harvard-Westlake 4, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: The Tologs fell on the road Friday evening, dropping to 8-3-2, 1-3 in the Mission League.
