Nothing special for Flintridge Prep football in loss to Campbell Hall

LOS ANGELES — At nearly every practice, the Flintridge Prep football team spends time working on special teams.

Unfortunately for Flintridge Prep, it struggled on special teams Friday night, as it allowed a punt return and kickoff return for touchdowns in a 35-15 nonleague home defeat against Campbell Hall at Occidental College.

The breakdowns left Flintridge Prep Coach Glen Beattie and the Rebels (2-3) frustrated.

“Our special teams didn’t do what they needed to do,” said Beattie, whose team had a bye the previous week. “I thought we had been good in that area up to this point, but you just can’t allow what happened to happen.

“We work on it in practice. We have to get better at it.”

The Rebels, who lost their second consecutive game, dictated the flow through a good chunk of the first half

The Rebels took an 8-0 lead on a one-yard run by quarterback Andrew Tsangeos with 8:49 left in the second quarter. Tsangeos, a reigning All-Area selection, then ran for the two-point conversion.

Arthur Chang of Flintridge Prep blocked a 46-yard field-goal attempt by Marcelo Navarro on the ensuing possession, but the Rebels couldn’t convert.

Campbell Hall (4-1) pulled to within 8-7 on a 44-yard punt return by Antonio Brown with 7:01 to go in the first half.

The Vikings then took a 14-8 lead on a one-yard run by running back Johnny Jones with 1:21 left in the second quarter.

Campbell Hall, which improved to 5-1 in its last six meetings with Flintridge Prep, extended the lead to 21-8 when Ethan Francais took the second-half kickoff back 89 yards.

“That made things a lot harder,” Beattie said. “We needed to be better in that situation.”

Flintridge Prep’s Aldridge Khin recovered a fumble after Brown muffed a punt return at the Campbell Hall 10-yard line with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. The Rebels took advantage of the miscue when Tsangeos scored on a three-yard run on fourth and goal with 10:57 remaining in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 21-15.

The Vikings scored on the ensuing possession, however, and dashed any hope for a Flintridge Prep comeback when Jones scored on a 34-yard run with 9:54 to go.

They closed out the scoring when wide receiver Omar Arzate caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lucas Bahner with 4:39 left.

Tsangeos completed 16 of 39 passes for 151 yards, Bahner completed 12 of 27 attempts for 161 yards. Flintridge prep running back Kole Hamane finished with 64 yards rushing in nine carries.

Flintridge Prep will next participate in a nonleague road contest against Brentwood at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
