Youth Sports: Two locals earn spots on NTIS rosters

Two Huntington Beach athletes, Shane Stafford and A.J. Hurtado, were named to National Team Identification Series Southern California team rosters.

Stafford and Hurtado, members of Ocean View Little League, have made the 14-Under and 13U rosters, respectively, for NTIS Southern California. Their teams will play games next month at the USA Baseball National Training Complex and Thomas Brooks Park in Cary, N.C.

Hurtado and his Southern California teammates will play in the 13U NTIS, known as the American Elite Baseball Championship, Aug. 10 to 14. Stafford and the Southern California 14U NTIS team will play games Aug. 25 to 28.

Some of the 13U tournament games will be streamed at MLB.com.

Youth Soccer

The Pateadores Soccer Club, based in Huntington Beach, was in Sweden and Denmark competing at the 2016 Gothia Cup.

The Gothia Cup is the largest youth international soccer tournament in the world. Teams from more than 70 nations are in the event, which began with group round games July 18 and concluded this past weekend. Results for the Pateadores team weren’t available at press time.

Water Polo

Huntington Beach teams and athletes are competing this week in Session 2 of the 2016 USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics in Northern California. Session 2 of the tournament, the final session of the two-week long event, starts Thursday and runs through Sunday.

Session one of the national tournament ended Tuesday.
