A Santa Ana man was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing mail and packages on four occasions from a Huntington Beach apartment complex, police said.

Huntington Beach police, referring to images captured by a security camera, said a man used a wire to open the door to the community mail room at The Residences at Bella Terra, 7521 Edinger Ave., on Jan. 1, 11 and 25 and Feb. 2.

Once inside, he used a key or tool to open residents’ mailboxes, making off with mail he wanted and discarding the rest. He also used parcel keys that had been locked in the mailboxes to open the parcel locker and steal packages, police said.

After posting about the incidents on social media, Huntington Beach police received an anonymous tip, which led them to a suspect. While executing a search warrant on the suspect’s house and vehicles, they found several items that had been reported stolen.

Derrick Trent, 36, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of burglary tools, police said.
