The search for a missing Huntington Beach woman with dementia whose car was found abandoned in the mountains has been called off and will not be continued, Huntington Beach police said.

Willie Jean Norman, 81, went missing Aug. 10.

The search for her was called off because of the Blue Cut fire, said Huntington Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Marlatt.

Norman’s disappearance took a strange turn after her SUV, a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was found abandoned Aug. 14 on a forest service road near Lytle Creek, a remote community in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Norman was last contacted Aug. 9 at about 10 a.m. by her daughter, according to authorities.

Her daughter told police that Norman, who lives alone, did not show up for her usual workout at the 24 Hour Fitness at Bella Terra, police said.

Norman does not have a previous history of wandering from her normal routine, according to authorities. She is described by police as African American, 5 feet tall and about 145 pounds.

Authorities have asked anyone with information about Norman to call (714) 960-8800.
