Having learned that more than 600 students in the Sunland-Tujunga area are identified as homeless, members of Assistance League of Flintridge recently approved a gift of 400 shoe vouchers in the amount of $25 each.

The league’s Operation School Bell committee worked with the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Homeless Education Program to coordinate the effort.

Presenting the shoe vouchers were Jean Silliman, chair of the Operation School Bell committee; her assistant chair, Lori Rotenberg and Assistance League of Flintridge President-elect Donna Shepherd. Accepting the gift was Katie Rivezzo, LAUSD Homeless Education Program counselor.

“Shoes are always a major need,” Rivezzo, whose focus is the Northeast section of the Los Angeles school district, said in a news release. “We often see students wearing shoes with holes and shoes that are too small.”

Calling the gift a “significant contribution to these children in need,” Rivezzo said counselors in the LAUSD program will assist families to purchase shoes with the vouchers.

Assistance League of Flintridge’s Operation School Bell also serves families in La Cañada Unified School District and partners with Assistance League of Pasadena for its outreach efforts in the Pasadena area.
