The Valley Line: Fall Shop Night helps local charities

Hope your Thanksgiving gathering was a grateful one filled with friends and family.

After spending two days in the kitchen, preparing two turkeys, pots of dressing and enough mashed potatoes to frost the entire San Gabriel Mountains, I can declare it was the best Thanksgiving dinner ever! Oh, did I mention the six pies, chocolate mousse made by the French nanny and specialty coffees to go with them?

Yes, the food was plenty but the best part of all was the gathering of our family with a few good friends thrown in for good measure. All in all, there were 25 of us. There were nine kids, three dogs with the rest being the never-boring adults with a plethora of tales to tell.

With this joyful holiday now logged into the diaries of sundry writers in the family, we are now headed full steam ahead for Christmas with thoughts of sugar plum faeries dancing in the heads of children and grandchildren.

In our community the focus has been on the advent of the holidays ahead, social activity has been on hold before the next round of festive parties begin — a breather before the storm.

In anticipation of Christmas shopping days ahead, the La Cañada Junior Women’s Club recently hosted its Fall Shop Night. This year’s event featured local stores and vendors in the 1300 and 1500 blocks of Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada.

This “shopping crawl” started at J. Stern Home and Garden for unique holiday decor, one-of-a-kind pillows, candles, home accents, gourmet foods and plants. While looking for home décor items on the shop’s patio, there were beautiful handbags, accessories, and jewelry and beauty items for the fashionista guests by India Hicks Designs. Next door at Thotshop Creatives, guests could design and paint a canvas bag, banner or holiday ornaments.

Then guests popped into Cowgirl Princess to shop for holiday party outfits, handbags and unique jewelry. At Texture Hair Spa, guests purchased gift cards for upcoming holiday salon services. An added delight was a relaxing 15-minute hand moisturizing treatment from Beautiful Face and Body by Pamela Ann. Guests then headed down to the Apple Cart to peruse home items and holiday décor, Brighton jewelry and Hobo handbags. While shopping, several of the places served refreshments.

Store owners and vendors donated 20% of the evening’s sales to help support La Cañada Junior’s philanthropies, Ronald McDonald House of Pasadena and Five Acres in Altadena.
