La Cañada Flintridge Councilman Spence declares reelection bid

Longtime La Cañada Flintridge City Councilman Dave Spence, who has so far spent 24 years on the dais, announced Tuesday he will seek reelection when his current seat expires in March.

“There are a lot of issues facing the city that I still want to address,” Spence said in an interview.

In a news release announcing his run, Spence specified some of those issues: a relocation of City Hall operations to a new building, most likely the former headquarters of Sport Chalet as announced last week; tackling an exclusive trash-hauling contract and establishing historic preservation of significant homes.

Spence said he considers his more than two decades spent building relationships across the region of value to his hometown, and his current positions on the powerful Local Agency Formation Commission and other panels, as hard-won.

In addition to his LAFCO seat, Spence serves on the county sheriff’s liability trust fund oversight committee, the executive committee of California Joint Powers Insurance Authority, the county Library Commission and the board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority San Gabriel Valley Service Sector.

Receiving appointments to the various boards and commissions requires a lot of “time and grade,” Spence said. “Once you’re there, they bring a lot of benefits to the community. The relationships I’ve built are extremely effective,” he said, pointing out that when there is a local issue he can call on his regional contacts for assistance and trust that it will be forthcoming.

Spence hopes to continue those relationships, which would only be possible through reelection to another four-year term on the council, he said. “I’d hate to give up those positions,” he said.

Two seats are open in the March 2017 election, those belonging to Spence and to current Mayor Jon Curtis. The filing period begins in November. For more information visit www.lcf.ca.gov.
