In recognition of the eighth annual Humanitarian Day on June 25, the Islamic Congregation of La Cañada Flintridge, in partnership with La Cañada Presbyterian Church and Masjid Al Taqwa mosque in Altadena, participated in activities for the homeless at Pasadena’s Central Park.

“When neighbors work together on local acts of service, big outcomes are bound to happen,” Levent Akabarut, leader of the local Islamic congregation, said of the event.

More than 200 people were assisted Saturday. They were given freshly-made sack lunches as well as backpacks with towels, socks, blankets, toiletries and personal hygiene items.

The event is held each year in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, the season of fasting for Muslims worldwide.
