Notes to the Editor: Wishes to the Valley Sun on its 70th anniversary

Share

When the first issue of the La Cañada Valley Sun hit homes on April 3, 1946, several residents wrote notes of support and encouragement for the new enterprise. In a celebration held Sunday at Lanterman House — the paper’s 70th anniversary — attendees shared their own thoughts on, and well wishes for the Valley Sun in these “Notes to the Editor.”

Living in La Cañada since 1970, the Valley Sun has been my partner all these years. My favorite has to be family pictures. We found ourselves the front cover [on] May 8, 1980, the whole family, “Breakfast in Bed for Mom.” Elementary school Jeffrey was with others catching the baseball as a season began and elementary school Sarah proudly walked across the pedestrian lane, in her new dress and with lunch box in hand. Of course, always, I appreciate La Cañada Unified School District coverage. And I will never forget your kind assistance with the passing of Dr. Charles Broberg.

Jeanne Broberg, former member of the LCUSD Governing Board

From selling subscriptions to school news, cityhood and all the important issues of our wonderful city, we have enjoyed our own L.C. Valley Sun. Congratulations!

Donald Voss, former member of the LCF City Council

When asked to describe La Cañada, one of the first things I do is tell people about the Valley Sun. Thank you for reflecting and being part of this community’s story and heart.

Andrew Blumenfeld, former member of the LCUSD Governing Board

Never a Thursday has gone by since we moved into the Foothills in 1963 that our family didn’t find a copy of the Valley Sun to read. Thank you.

Mary and Daryal Gant

The La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Assn. appreciates the efforts of the Valley Sun to let the community know about us.

Bill Pounders, 2014-15 president, LCFTRA

The Valley Sun is the heartbeat of our city … yesterday, today and tomorrow. Here’s to 70 more years for La Cañada Flintridge and the paper we love!

Greg Waskul

The La Cañada Valley Sun was so welcoming for a newlywed couple. It kept us up on the news for LCF. I enjoy weekly our Valley Sun.

Kristen Brakeman

Christie Crahan

A job well done. Congrats on 70!

City Councilman Michael Davitt

I filled in for Barbara Strawn in her several months absence as “Chit Chat” columnist in the 1970s, plus a few feature stories. Loved being in the old building on Foothill and associations with Joe DuPlain (longtime Valley Sun owner) — he had graduated from Gulf Coast Military Academy in my home town of Biloxi, Miss. and we enjoyed reminiscing about our lives on the Gulf Coast. My fairly brief career at the Valley Sun covering social events in the community is a very special memory for me! Shirley DeGrey was one of my very best friends and a devoted writer for the Valley Sun too.

Fran Evans

Nice to see the old Valley Sunners and members of the community.

Laurie Welch, former Valley Sun photographer

Carol, thanks for always remembering Nicholas.

Reg Green, frequent Valley Sun contributor and author of “The Nicholas Effect.”

Congratulations on 70 years of the Valley Sun.
