La Cañada adds four to hall of fame

The La Cañada High Hall of Fame will swell by four members as a quartet of inductees will join the prestigious group at a ceremony on campus Sunday.

Former standouts Anna Edwards, Lauren O’Leary, Matt Faber and Mike McGlasshan, all from the class of 2011, will be inducted at 1 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The foursome will comprise the 18th group of inductees since the first class was registered in 1989.

Edwards and O’Leary were part of a historic championship softball team.

Edwards played four years of varsity for coach KC Mathews and was an All-Rio Hondo League three-time selection, enjoying back-to-back league most valuable player honors her junior and senior years at shortstop. Those two seasons, Edwards was named All-CIF and finished with a career batting average of .455 with 27 home runs, 94 runs batted in and 68 extra-base hits. Her biggest hit was a solo home run in the third inning of the CIF Southern Section Division V championship game that La Cañada won, 1-0, over Beaumont on June 3, 2011 in Irvine. From La Cañada, Edwards moved on to Northwestern University.

O’Leary was the Spartans’ pitcher on the 2011 CIF championship team and was named the league’s co-pitcher of the year her junior and senior years. In her senior year, she was also named the CIF Southern Section Division V Pitcher of the Year as she tossed a shutout in the title game. In her senior year, she posted a 25-2 record, a .39 earned-run average with 237 strikeouts and 16 shutouts. O’Leary continued her athletic career at Georgetown.

Faber was a jack of all trades for the Spartans and participated in four sports: football, basketball, tennis and volleyball. During his junior year, Faber earned an All-Rio Hondo League first-team selection in football for punting. In his senior year, Faber was a member of the CIF Southern Section Division III boys’ basketball championship team and was named an all-league first-team choice and All-CIF co-MVP with McGlasshan. That season, Faber set the record for most rebounds in a single season. Faber attended the Naval Academy after finishing up at La Cañada.

McGlasshan was premier performer on the basketball team for four years under Tom Hofman. He first gained recognition his sophomore year when he was named an all-league second-team pick. In McGlasshan’s senior year, he was named the Rio Hondo League MVP and the 2011 CIF Division III co-MVP with Faber on the Spartans championship team. McGlasshan is fifth all-time in scoring in school history with 1,230 points and is also No. 5 in assists (254). McGlasshan graduated from USC.

Bergman takes loss in first start

Making his first starting appearance with the Seatle Mariners, former St. Francis High standout Christian Bergman suffered a 4-0 road loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

The former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year went five innings. The right-hander allowed three runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out one in a 66-pitch effort.

The leadoff batter reached base in four of five innings worked by Bergman, who previously played for the Colorado Rockies before joining Seattle in the offseason.

“It’s tough when the leadoff guy is getting on every inning,” Bergman told the Seattle Times. “It was a difficult part of my night. I did the best I could to minimize the damage. But it was an uphill battle most of the night. The command was a little bit off.”

Bergman, 29, has a 4.15 earned-run average.
