A five-year Rio Hondo League championship drought is over for the La Cañada High girls’ volleyball team.

The Spartans dispatched host Blair 25-9, 25-14, 25-4 on Thursday afternoon to clinch a share of the program’s first league title since 2012 and 23rd in school history.

“It’s a great feeling,” La Cañada third-year coach Chris Sullivan said. “It’s been a struggle the last two years where we basically called up the junior varsity team and just played and grew together.

“From where we started to where we are now, it was all hard work.”

The drought was the second-longest in school history, only topped by a stretch between the program’s 1989 and 1995 title teams.

With the victory, La Cañada improved to 15-5 and 8-1 in league. The Spartans are currently a match ahead of Monrovia (14-6, 7-2) with one match remaining and can claim an outright title with a victory over visiting Temple City on Monday.

As for Thursday, nine Spartans picked up at least one kill, paced by senior Chloe Kerstein, who finished with nine kills.

Freshman Maya White tallied 10 aces, while Claire Saydah tallied 16 digs and sophomore Alexandra Gates finished with 28 assists.

“I’m never really surprised by them,” Sullivan said. “They’re had the fighting spirit for years. They just haven’t had the pieces until this season.”
