GIRLS’ WRESTLING

La Cañada at the CIF State Championships: Though Spartans 170-pounder Sophie Garcia didn’t enjoy the best of days, the junior still finished 1-1 and advanced to Saturday’s final day of the season at the Visalia Convention Center.

Garcia opened with a bye in the round of 32, which advanced her to face James Logan’s Emily Sandoval.

Sandoval bested Garcia, 4-0, and dropped the Spartans’ first-ever girls’ state qualifier into the consolation bracket.

Garcia kept her season alive by pinning Montgomery’s Jasmin Ballesteros in 1:49 to advance to Saturday.

Garcia will face Northview’s Mia Sandoval with consolation action starting at 9 a.m.

“Of course we’re thrilled for Sophie,” La Cañada wrestling coordinator and boys’ coach Justin Luthey said. “Sophie has the confidence and thinks she can make it into a medal bout. For me, it’s a win just to get to the last day of the season. Everyone is really proud.”

BOYS’ WRESTLING

La Cañada at the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet: A historic postseason effort ended quickly for the Spartans on Friday’s first day at Temecula Valley High.

La Cañada qualified three wrestlers to the Masters Meet for the first time in school history and picked up one victory between the trio of seniors David Sarkisian, Ben Donoho and Colman Trulik.

Donoho notched that triumph as the 160-pounder finished with a 1-2 mark.

Donoho opened with the area’s only championship round victory via a pin in 3:01 over Ayala’s Daniel Prescott.

The victory, however, was followed by two losses and elimination as La Quinta La Quinta’s Noel Magallanes picked up a 3-1 win over Donoho, who was then pinned in consolation bracket action in 2:50 by St. John Bosco’s Michael Beltran.

Sarkisian and Trulik finished 0-2 as Sarkisian lost by technical pin and fall and Trulik was pinned and suffered a 5-2 defeat.

“We’re all a little disappointed because we wanted more for the guys,” La Cañada boys’ coach Justin Luthey said. “At the same time, they did make history and Ben did get a win. My goal was ultimately to get the guys wrestling at a higher level and they did this season.”
