Sports Roundup: Garcia sisters enjoy historic day for La Cañada wrestling

La Cañada at Blackwatch Tournament: It was a historic effort for the La Cañada High wrestling program, which for the first time advanced two girls into individual championship matches.

Junior Cheyenne Garcia won her school’s first individual tournament title at 189 pounds, while sister Sophia Garcia was runner-up at 160 pounds at the Blackwatch Tournament at Upland High on Thursday.

“I’m proud of them and it’s just a testament to how hard they’re working,” La Cañada Coach Justin Luthey said. “I’m glad to see they’re successful and representing their sport and their school.”

Cheyenne Garcia went 3-0 and locked down a pin in her championship match. Sophie Garcia finished 2-1 and led in the finals, but stumbled and succumbed to a fall.

The boys’ competition ended Wednesday and the Spartans placed two competitors.

Junior Ben Donoho finished sixth at 160 pounds, was 4-1 and cruising through the consolation bracket before dropping his final two matches to finish 4-3.

Senior Andrew Aghadjanians started off 3-1, but defaulted on his last two matches due to injuries to take eighth at 145 pounds.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St Francis 85, La Serna 70: The Golden Knights (9-3) won their first tournament of the season Thursday after triumphing in the Nogales Tourament.

Joey Walsh led the way with a game-high 31 points. Walsh added six rebounds and three assists, while Sean Stephen tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds and Malakhi Jensen scored 16 points.

Santa Fe 58, Flintridge Prep 23: Flintridge Prep (3-5) dropped a consolation game Thursday in the Santa Barbara Tournament. Jake Althouse and Kendall Kikkawa had six points apiece for the Rebels.

Flintridge Prep picked up a 58-49 tournament win against Bishop Diego on Wednesday. Jake Althouse had 16 points and nine rebounds and Jonathan Lee contributed 14 points for the Rebels.

La Cañada 61, Diamond Bar 59: The Spartans earned advancement to the bronze division title game of the Damien Classic after a semifinal victory Thursday evening at San Dimas High.

Sean Estes scored a team-high 21 points for La Cañada (10-3), while Justin Kouyoumdjian added 19 points.

The Spartans are 3-1 in the tournament and will play Friday at 4 p.m. against Hesperia at Damien in La Verne.

BOYS’ SOCCER

La Cañada in Crescenta Valley Tournament: The Spartans finished off a 1-2 run in pool play action with a 4-1 loss to Royal on Thursday afternoon.

Previous to that, the Spartans (3-4-1) lost to Crescenta Valley on Wednesday, but defeated La Salle, 5-0, on Tuesday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 69, South Hills 60: Camilla Homans finished with 17 points for the Tologs (6-9) on Thursday in the seventh-place game of the La Cañada Tournament.

Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary 51, Flintridge Prep 45: Flintridge Prep (8-2) lost a pool-play game Tuesday in the Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary Tournament. The Rebels received 15 points from Taylor Yoshida and 13 from Renae Tamura.
