Sports Roundup: La Cañada boys’ basketball claims outright crown

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 56, Monrovia 36: It’s an outright Rio Hondo League championship for the Spartans, who honored their 1992 CIF Southern Section championship squad with a home victory Friday.

La Cañada, which has won four straight titles, improved to 22-4 and 8-0 in league, which put the Spartans three games ahead of Blair (5-3) with only two games remaining.

Flintridge Prep 51, Pasadena Poly 45 OT: The Rebels pulled out a thrilling Prep League overtime victory at home on Friday evening.

Kendall Kikkawa hit two free throws to send the game into overtime and then scored all eight of his team’s points in overtime for the win. Kikkawa finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Jake Althouse added 13 points and eight rebounds for Flintridge Prep (11-8, 6-2).

While the Rebels have finished their regular season, Pasadena Poly (5-1 in league) and Chadwick (4-2) still have two games remaining.

Chaminade 68, St. Francis 53: Down by 12 points at halftime, the visiting Golden Knights were unable to make a comeback in a Mission League loss Friday evening.

St. Franics is 14-10 and 3-7 in league.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

La Cañada 77, Monrovia 19: Three players scored in double figures for the Spartans, who moved closer to a Rio Hondo League title after a home win Friday afternoon.

Zoe Williams led the Spartans (20-5, 8-0 in league) with 12 points, while Emma Stroben added 11 points and Stephanie Musso contributed 10 points.

La Cañada can clinch a share of the league title with a win on Tuesday against Temple City and will likely need to defeat South Pasadena on Thursday to take the title outright.

Flintridge Prep 61, Mayfield 33: The Rebels got 19 points from Renae Tamura and 15 from Taylor Yoshida on Thursday in a Prep League home game.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 52, Marymount 50: The host Tologs picked up their first Mission League win Thursday. Sacred Heart (8-17, 1-6 in league) received 16 points from Ryan Dubb and 13 from Janna deVera.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Cañada 1, Monrovia 0: The Spartans picked up a significant Rio Hondo League road victory on Friday afternoon.

With the win, La Cañada maintained its grip on first place by improving to 7-10-2 and 4-1-1 in league. The Spartans have 13 points in league, ahead of Temple Cit (3-3-1, 10 points) and San Marino (2-2-2, eight points).

Harvard-Westlake 3, Flintridge Sacred Heart 0: The Tologs fell in a Mission League road contest on Friday afternoon.

With the defeat, Flintridge Sacred Heart is now 9-4-1 and 3-3 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

St. Francis 5, Chaminade 3: The Golden Knights moved into fourth place in the Mission League after a come-from-behind victory Friday afternoon.

St. Francis (8-7-4, 3-5-2) trailed, 2-1, at halftime but scored four straight second-half goals for the victory.

Colton Ramirez netted two goals for the Golden Knights, while Dulles Hanula, Ian Odernaht and Ryan Baz each chipped in one score each.
