Planning Commission approves tax breaks for historic homes

The Planning Commission unanimously approved two historic La Cañada Flintridge properties — 2102 Cross Street and 758 Flintridge Ave. — for Mills Act contracts on Tuesday night. If approved by the City Council at its Dec. 15 meeting, the total of Mills Act designated properties in the city will increase to 12, according to Planning Department staff.

After 70 years, Montrose Barber shop is a cut above

La Cañada Flintridge resident Tom Hokinson can’t remember how he stumbled into the Montrose Barber Shop for his first haircut there.

He assumes that someone must have recommended the place, though he can’t remember, for sure. That was back in the 1970s, and now, Hokinson has been a regular for 45 years.

On Wednesday morning, the shop’s owner, Jack Roscher, was nearly done cutting Hokinson’s hair.

Piece of Mind: Healthy servings of traditions new and old

In the annual burst of pre-holiday preparations around our house, floors have been buffed, baseboards scrubbed and the lighting fixtures (at least the few we could reach) are sparkling. There's been some dusting taking place, too, but not so thorough a job that we'd encourage any visitors to do a white glove test.
