Northern State celebrated its season home opener, but the visitors from Jamestown College celebrated a victory.
Jamestown College downed Northern State 7-6 in 12 innings on Wednesday at Fossum Field in a non-conference baseball matchup which was NSU's first home game of the season.
The game was knotted at 5-all after nine innings. Neither team scored in the 10th or 11th innings. The Jimmies broke out with two runs in the top of the 12th inning to grab a 7-5 lead. With two outs, a Jamestown hitter reached base on an error, advanced to third on a single and scored on a balk. The second run scored on an RBI single by Derek Wallace.
The Wolves did not go down quietly in the bottom half of the 12th inning. Robbie Rocamora walked and Zach Miller followed with a single. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice by Casey Bohms. Jose Figueroa delivered an RBI single and the tying run advanced to third base. The Marauders stiffened and coaxed the Wolves to hit into a popup to shortstop and a flyout to center field to end the game. Two NSU runners were stranded in scoring position.
Figueroa led the Wolves with three hits. Jesse Gonzalez, Miller, Buddy Traxler and Jack Thompson added two hits each. NSU outhit Jamestown 14 to 11. The Jimmies used seven pitchers in the game and Northern had five pitchers.
Northern State will return to action on Saturday and Sunday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheaders at Minnesota-Crookston. Game times are noon both days.
