Northern State turned in some winning marks under windy conditions on Friday.
The Wolves hosted the NSU Open/Multi-Events at Clark Swisher Field in Aberdeen. The women's heptathlon started on Thursday and concluded before the meet on Friday.
There were athletes from Northern State, Valley City State, University of Mary, Jamestown College, Concordia-Moorhead, Minot State, North Dakota State and some unattached athletes as well.
All of the athletes had to put up with 30 mph wind gusts.
We had such a nice spring. It is kind of a bummer to come out and have a track meet and it is 30 miles an hour the whole day, Northern State coach Jim Fuller said. Some gusts were bigger.
It was the first outdoor track meet that NSU has hosted since the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meet last season. That meet was also in heavy winds, but was also about 20 degrees colder, too.
I think if you haven't run in it a little bit and done some things in the wind, maybe it makes it a little harder when you have to, Fuller said. Because you have got to at a conference meet.
NSU still turned in 17 first-place finishes on the afternoon, with some of those winning marks being aided by the wind and also affected by the gusts. Some of the Wolves' throwers took advantage of the wind.
NSU's Alexandra Webster finished second in the women's javelin throw with a toss of 132-feet and 11-inches. The mark is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. It was Webster's first collegiate track meet.
Alex was a very good thrower in North Dakota, Fuller said. She went to Bismarck State and didn't throw the last two years. She transferred down here and that is a good start. That is her first collegiate meet ever and hits a provisional mark.
Teammates and sisters Kaitlyn Sturlaugson and Britlyn Sturlaugson finished second and fifth respectively in the same event - javelin. Kaitlyn had a toss of 122-2, while Britlyn had a mark of 121-5.
Yvonne Freese won the discus with a mark of 141-11, which as just shy of the NCAA provisional mark. Melodi Boke finished fourth in the event with a toss of 119-5.
However, the Faulkton graduate did her damage in the shot put and hammer throw. Boke won both events, with a mark of 43-7 in the shot put and a toss of 128-10 in the hammer throw. Her shot put mark was close to an NCAA provisional mark.
Langford graduate Austin Suther won the long jump with a leap of 21-7 and ran the anchor leg on the winning mile relay team. When Suther grabbed the baton, he was trailing his opponent from Jamestown College, but quickly took the lead and easily won the mile relay race for the Wolves. He also ran on the Wolves' winning 400-meter relay team.
Austin is so competitive, Fuller said. He really competes hard. I was pleased with that.
Luke Hauert hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of :14.42. North Dakota State standout and former Pierre hurdler Matt Tetzlaff won the event with a mark of :14.21, which broke the Swisher Field record.
Jill Schaeffer came close to a provisional mark in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of :14.94. The provisional standard is :14.40.
Jill Schaeffer ran well, Fuller said. That was close to provisional, but when you are under 15 (seconds) you are doing pretty good. I think Jill was happy with that and she opened up that mile relay for the girls.
NSU's Hannah Treinen won the women's heptathlon with 3,788 points, while teammate Leandra Schlecht placed second with 3,627 points.
I was happy with both Hannah and Leandra, Fuller said. They did do some things really well. Leandra, her javelin throw jumped out at me. Eighty-six feet - and she has never done that. That is a really good start in that event. I thought that was good. Hannah ran a pretty good (800) despite the wind and at the end of the day.
Britton-Hecla graduate and Jamestown College senior Robert Nelson won the discus throw with a toss of 164-2, while he placed fourth in the shot with a throw of 44-1 .
The Wolves runners and jumpers will be at the Sioux City Relays in Sioux City, Iowa, next Friday and Saturday. Northern's throwers will be at the University of Mary on Sunday.
Our conference meet is up there, Fuller said about Mary. It is a brand new hammer ring and they throw javelin off grass. We want to see what that is like. We just wanted to give those throwers a chance to do that, so we will be at a couple of different places.
