1986 - Aberdeen Central kept its state tournament hopes alive by defeating Pierre 35-31 in the third-place game of the District 3AA basketball tournament. David Manning scored 12 points to pace the Golden Eagles.
1996 - Hitchcock High School graduate JoEllen Hofer hit a jumper with one second left to lift Huron to a 77-75 victory over Doane in the semifinals of the women's NAIA Division II national tournament. Huron (30-3) will face defending champion Western Oregon (30-4) in the title game.
2001 - Top region seeds in the men's NCAA college basketball tournament went to Michigan State (24-4) in the South, Duke (29-4) in the East, Illinois (24-7) in the Midwest and Stanford (28-2) in the West.
2006 - Darcey Faulhaber netted 21 points and Bobbie Jo Bishop added 20 to lead Presentation to a 73-60 women's college basketball win over Marygrove College in the fifth-place game at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament.
2010 - Top-seeded Aberdeen Central lost its opening-round game at the State AA high school girls' basketball tournament, 44-41 to Sioux Falls O'Gorman. Alison Kusler led the Central effort with 18 points.
