1986 - Darryl Wetzler of Aberdeen was one of 10 officials named to work the South Dakota Class B high school wrestling tournament.
1996 - Marc Tobin scored three goals and Barry Schmidt added two as the Aberdeen Cougars blasted Watertown 11-2 in a high school hockey game.
2001 - Seven-time Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt was killed in a crash at Daytona Speedway in Florida. Earnhardt, known to legions of fans as The Intimidator, hit the wall in turn four almost head-on in a three-car crash on the final lap of Daytona 500. Earnhardt, 49, was sixth on NASCAR's all-time wins list with 76.
2006 - Northern State pulled away from a five-point halftime lead and rolled to an 87-46 victory over Minnesota-Crookston in men's college basketball. Matt Hammer topped NSU with 16 points, Adam Grant scored 11 and Luke Wicks added 10 to the Wolves' total.
2010 - Aberdeen Central won its 13th straight high school girls' basketball game, rolling to a 61-35 Eastern South Dakota Conference triumph over Pierre. Alison Kusler topped Central (16-2) with 14 points. Ashley LaFave and Kelcy Schaunaman added 10 points each to the Central effort.
