MITCHELL - The Aberdeen Central wrestling team powered its way to a win in its first conference dual action of the season.
The Golden Eagles kicked off the Eastern South Dakota Conference dual competition with a 51-9 win over Mitchell on Thursday. Central lost just three matches in the dual and picked up four pins.
We won the first four weight classes and that definitely gave us some momentum going into the middle weights, said Central wrestling coach Rocky Burkett.
The Central wins by pin were all recorded in less than 1 minutes.
Trevor Larson started the pin parade at 126 pounds when he used 1 minute 20 seconds to defeat Tanner Vilhauer of Mitchell and give Central an 18-0 lead in the team competition.
The Kernels got on the scoreboard with decisions at 132 and 138 pounds, but Aberdeen won the next seven matches. Mitchell Johnson started the Central run with a 3-1 decision at 145 pounds. Zach Russman, who filled in at 152 pounds for an injured John Frisco, pinned Austin Mohr in 36 seconds.
Trevor Larson and Zach Russman came out right away and got pins and set a good pace. They got after it and set the tone, said Burkett.
The third Central pin came at 170 pounds when Grayson Neuharth needed just 1:22 for the win. Central's final points were a pin by Sam Schaunaman at 220 pounds. Schaunaman needed 41 seconds to pin Riley Heck.
The Golden Eagles wrestled without Frisco and Griffin Hieb, who are both slightly injured, said Burkett.
We want to get both Frisco and Griffin healthy, said Burkett. Russman stepped up and did good and Dexter filled in and did a good job against a tough kid.
Aberdeen doesn't return to action until Dec. 21 at Pierre. The Governors are the defending State A champions and won the Rapid City Invitational last weekend.
We'll work on some thing and take time to fix things, said Burkett. Against Pierre we want to go out and be the aggressor and get on them right away.
