BRITTON - Defending State B champion Webster tuned up for another title run by capturing the Region 1B team title on Saturday.
The Bearcats won six individual weight classes on the way to racking up 197 points. Groton was runnerup with 136.
Aberdeen Roncalli finished with 27 points and qualified one wrestler, Tyson Mitzel, for this weekend's state tourney in Rapid City.
The sophomore won the 152-pound championship and broke a school record in the process. Mitzel improved to 41-1 on the year with three more wins, breaking the old single season record of 40 victories set by Chase Tempel in 2008.
It's good that Tyson was a region champion, said Briese, noting that Mitzel was runnerup at the region a year ago. He was glad that he came through and got a first-place finish.
It was also a bit of a disappointing day for the Cavaliers because Matt Schlosser and Zach Sumner came up short in their quest to get to state.
I told them all week, we have to take care of our first match, Briese said.
Roncalli lost both of those matches to make the road to state much more difficult.
They both did a great job of coming back in their wrestleback match, Briese said.
However, neither was able to finish in the top four during the tourney.
As a result, Mitzel will be Roncalli's lone representative at the state tourney. He was seventh a year ago.
His goals are set much higher, Briese said of the upcoming weekend.
