Justin Fegers raced out to an early lead and never relinquished it on his way to a $3,000 paycheck during the first day of the Dacotah Rumble.
The Minnetonka, Minn., driver won the 40-lap Late Model feature race on Friday at Brown County Speedway. Fegers grabbed the lead during the fourth lap and never trailed again. The race went green-white-checkered.
You definitely never really want to see a caution when you are the leader unless you are in some heavy lapped traffic, said Fegers, whose brother Marshall finished fifth in the race. The way the track got to be tonight I did not mind the lapped traffic because I knew if I held that line nobody was going to get by.
Justin Fegers passed John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis., on the fourth lap and held a comfortable lead the rest of the race, which featured 25 cars. It was Fegers' first win of the season and his first win ever at BCS.
It feels good to finally get the first one out of the way, he said. Maybe there will be a few more to follow.
There were 41 Late Model cars on Friday night and 126 total cars during the first night of the Rumble. The Modified division had 43 cars. The Modified feature went 40 laps and Cory Skytland of Fargo, N.D., claimed the feature race. He earned $1,500 for the win.
Skytland grabbed the lead on the 28th lap when he got past a logjam of drivers, including Kent Arment of Aberdeen, Scott Ward of Watertown and Joey Jenson of Forest Lake, Minn., around turns three and four. After Skytland took the lead he never gave it up.
You really had to behave and save your tires (in longer races), Skytland said. The first 25 (laps) here tonight I was really trying to save that right rear. This car is awesome around the bottom, so we went down there and she stuck and we got her done.
Jeromy Thorstenson of Bath won his first feature race of the season at his home track. He led for the last 17 laps of the 20-lap Street Stock feature and fended off Lance Haskell of Conde and Mike Mund of Milnor, N.D., for the win.
I passed the leader on the bottom, but the top felt faster, Thorstenson said. It was easier to drive. It acted like a rail up there to keep the car nice and straight.
