SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Northern State had a day featuring highs and lows during the Cliff Keen National Dual wrestling tournament on Saturday.
The Wolves lost to Central Oklahoma 29-10, bounced back to defeat Truman State 39-12 before falling to Augustana 25-15.
Right now we're kind of learning a little bit about ourselves as a dual team and what we need to do to be successful, said Northern coach Pat Timm.
Timm pointed out the effort of Donnie Bowden, who beat the number five rated wrestler in the nation during the Central Oklahoma dual.
He's coming around, Timm said. He's wrestling really well since the Midwest Classic.
Matt Meuleners continued his winning ways at heavyweight, racking up a pin, a 14-2 decision and a forfeit in his three matches.
He's always consistent. We're just trying to find a different level in him as well, Timm said. I think he might have made another level jump this weekend.
The Wolves were one match away from placing in the top eight in the tourney, but came up short against conference foe Augustana.
We had some opportunities in that dual, but Augustana is a tough team and they just seemed to shut the door on us whenever we were close, Timm said. They've got a quality program. We want to get to that level. We have to be able to raise the bar.
Still, the long trek to face some of the top teams in the country was well worth it, according to Timm.
All in all the experience of coming up here is just invaluable, he said. I hope we can qualify and come to this next year.
The Wolves host St. Cloud State at 7 p.m. Friday and Upper Iowa at 4 p.m. Saturday at Wachs Arena. Those two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference squads will battle each other in the semifinals of the national tourney today.
It's number two and number three in the country right now, Timm said, so it doesn't get much easier.
