JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The Aberdeen Central gymnasts did what needed to be done and found success at the Tri-State Invitational on Tuesday.
Competing with the minimum of five girls, the Golden Eagles fashioned a score of 131.95 points on the day. A highlight of the evening was Taylor Schweitzer’s performance on the vault, where she collected her third score of 9.0 or higher and qualified her for the state meet.
“Knowing we didn’t have a full squad, I think they knew they had to step it up and do the best they could do,” said Central coach Jennifer Deutsch. “We still have some issues to fix before our next meet.”
Aimee Padgett won the only first-place finish for the Eagles, scoring an 8.6 on the uneven bars, and Deutsch said was happy with the beam routines of Jenny Janish (8.3) and Schweitzer (8.7) as well.
“Janish and Schweitzer stuck their beam routines and that’s what we needed to get good scores,” Deutsch said.
The meet featured both the varsity and middle-school squads competing, while Central’s junior varsity was in a meet at Britton.
“This was kind of fun with the varsity being able to cheer the younger girls on and the young ones can watch the older girls to see what they are working so hard for,” Deutsch said.
The Golden Eagles are off until a home triangular meet on Jan. 3 against Pierre and Stanley County. Deutsch said the team will work to improve its routines until then.
“We have no room for the mistakes we have been having,” Deutsch said. “We have to figure out how to fix those. There is still work to be done and some easy fixes.”
