RAPID CITY --
The Aberdeen Central wrestling team returned from out west with five placewinners.
The Golden Eagles had five wrestlers finish among the top eight at the Rapid City Invitational, a two-day tourney that concluded on Saturday. Pierre, the defending State A champion, won the 35-team tournament with 215-1/2 points to 181-1/2 for Rapid City Central in second place. Aberdeen tied for 10th with 105 points and crowned a champion at 138 pounds.
Senior Griffin Hieb rolled through the tournament by starting out with four pins. In the championship match at 138 pounds, Griffin Hieb received a win when Caleb Stoltenburg of Pierre defaulted due to injury.
“If you go out in a 35-team tournament and pin four guys and get to the final, that’s pretty good,” said Central wrestling coach Rocky Burkett. “If there would have been a fall award at the tourney, Griffin would have gotten it.”
Hieb was in control for much of the tournament.
“He controlled his matches and when he got a chance to be on top, he could turn his opponents and get pins. He stayed focused,” said Burkett.
Junior Mitchell Johnson lost in the semifinal round at 145 pounds but picked up two more wins to finish third. He beat Kris Miller of Gillette, Wyo., 4-2 in the third place match.
After three pins at 120 pounds on Friday, junior Trevor Hieb lost in the semifinal round and again in the consolation bracket. He also lost 5-3 to Dominick Schooler of Hill City to finish sixth overall.
The Golden Eagles earned another place at 145 pounds when junior Zach Russman started off with two decisions. He was pinned in the quarterfinals, but bounced back with a win in the wrestlebacks. After a loss in the fifth round wrestlebacks, Russman pinned Matt Larson of Mitchell to earn seventh place.
The final Central place-winner was sophomore Sam Schaunaman at 220 pounds. He lost in the first round, but advanced in the wrestlebacks with a bye, a decision and a win by injury default. A pin advanced Schaunaman to the seventh place match where he was pinned by Logan Ammons of Philip.
“It was a good chance to see what a tough two-day tournament is,” said Burkett. “The state tournament is tough and two days. You have to keep battling each round and you can’t take a match off.”
The Aberdeen Central wrestlers return to action on Thursday in an Eastern South Dakota Conference dual at Mitchell.
