Presentation College threw its three football seniors a going-away party to remember Saturday night in Aberdeen.
The Saints dedicated its 50-18 win over Trinity Bible College of Ellendale in honor of seniors Jalanni James, Sean Haderlie and Cullen O’Brien in the final game of PC’s second season. PC started the game with a five-play, 52-yard touchdown drive and then the opportunistic Saints took advantage of bad snaps and fumbles to take a 50-0 lead at halftime.
“You can’t script a better way to end the season under the lights with a win over a close rival,” Haderlie said. “There aren’t words to describe how I feel about helping to start this program and looking around at all these younger guys and seeing the bright future of this program and the direction it is going. And Jalanni and Cullen are the best. We all bring different traits to the game, but we all love the game, and I think that shows.”
At halftime, Trinity Bible had minus 140 yards total offense. Last season, Trinity Bible defeated the Saints 39-13 in the school’s first-ever football game. The football games have added to a rivalry between colleges just 40 miles apart.
But this night belonged to the Saints, who had seven different players involved in its points as well as getting two team safeties. As the TBC mistakes mounted, so did the PC points.
“The guys came out focused and knew what they needed to do,” PC coach Andy Carr said. “We had a good week of practice and it showed by the way we executed. It was far from a perfect game, but we did a lot of things right. Plus, all of our guys got in a lot of good snaps. I am proud of our entire team.”
Carr said he is grateful for all that his three seniors have done to help get the PC football program off the ground. “This win was great for our program, great for our underclassmen and great that we were able to honor our seniors in this way. It was a very special and exciting night that we will remember for a long time.”
Having a hand in the Saints points were Keenan Honore, Gavin Voss, Will Vealy, Eric Schueth, Stephen Braswell, Derek Buthe and Haderlie. Orlando Torres led the defense with nine tackles, including three sacks.
TBC running back Johnny Perry scored three touchdowns for the Lions in the fourth quarter. Daniel Rodriguez led the TBC defense with seven unassisted tackles.
TBC coach Dustin Morgan said he anticipated a close game, but was worried last week when PC lost to St. Scholastica 20-17 in overtime. “That was a good football team that Presentation almost beat,” he said. “Plus last season, PC was a lot better football team at the end of the season than it was at the beginning. That is just the M.O. (Modus operandi) of Coach Carr and his staff. You know those guys are going to coach their guys up through the whole season.”
Things continued to worsen in the second quarter for Trinity Bible when it lost its standout quarterback Justin Smith when he was knocked unconscious for a few seconds on a play. After he regained consciousness, Smith had to be taken off the field in a stretcher. There was no report on his condition after the game.
Trinity Bible College (3-6) will finish the regular season in Lawrence, Kan., against Haskell Indian Nations at 1 p.m. Saturday.
“Things just didn’t work out tonight,” Morgan said. “That is the way it goes sometimes in this game. At halftime, we told our kids we can either throw in the towel or fight for the name on the front of our jerseys. And I am proud of my kids’ effort in the second half.”
