With the home stretch just a matter of a few short weeks away, Aberdeen Roncalli track and field squads began turning the corner during the Valley Queen Cheese Invitational on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers improved their season-best marks and also had a state-qualifying performance.
“Overall, it was our best track day of the year in terms of competition,” said Roncalli coach Mark Stone. “Some of our athletes are starting to make some measured improvements.”
The boys were led by Zach Schaefbauer, who qualified for state in the 110-meter high hurdles on the way to a second-place finish in a time of :15.71.
“Zach ran a really nice set of hurdles today,” Stone pointed out.
Stone also noted the performances of Mitch Musel who won the triple jump, Chad Hay who was second in the long jump, Dalton Cox who won the shot put and Jon Schwab who won the discus. Roncalli also received first-place finishes from Matt Swallow in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, Layne Holzer in the 100-meter dash, and the 800-meter and 3,200-meter relay squads.
“We can see where we’re maybe starting to turn the corner a little bit,” Stone said.
On the girls’ side Abby Dockter won the shot put and Christy Renner was runnerup in the discus.
“I’m really proud of those two girls in the throws,” Stone said.
He also was quick to point out the effort of freshman Grace Allen who went 4-feet-7 in the high jump to tie for second place.
“That’s a big, big confidence boost for her,” Stone said, noting her previous best was 4-3.
Hailey Kline won the 100-meter hurdles and Roncalli also finished first in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter relay races.
“We’re still a work in progress,” Stone said.
Kassi Jones of Britton-Hecla won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes on the day.
The Cavaliers will likely split their squads up for the weekend, sending one group to the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls and the other to a meet in Ipswich on Saturday.
