The top scorers in the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association boys’ varsity division exploded for a combined seven goals and eight assists in Aberdeen Saturday.
Mitchell teammates Spencer Lawrence and Austin Loes will take their show to TV today. They led the Marlins to a 10-2 win over the Sioux Falls Flyers in the state tourney consolation semifinals at the Odde Ice Center.
Mitchell will play in the consolation championship at 12:30 this afternoon on Midco Sports Net-TV. The season ends for Sioux Falls as there is no seventh-place game.
“We have played together since we were mini-mites,” said Mitchell junior Austin Loes. “And next week, we start practice for the South Dakota under 16 national team. We practice together all the time. Hockey is what we do. It is a great sport and we love it.”
Mitchell sophomore Spencer Lawrence added, “We just always know where each other is going to be on the ice. If I send a pass Austin’s way, I know he is going to be there to either shoot it or pass it to someone else.”
So far in this tourney, Loes has five goals and four assists while Lawrence has four goals and six assists. In play against league teams this season, Lawrence scored 85 points (52 goals, 33 assists) and Loes has 82 points (38 goals and 44 assists).
The sometimes unstoppable duo pass a lot of credit to their teammates.
“It all starts with our defense and we couldn’t do any of this without our teammates,” Lawrence said.
“It is not just me and Spencer, but the other guys on the team too,” Loes said. “We don’t have a lot of numbers (Mitchell is dressing only 12 players this weekend), but we have great teammates like our goalie Dillon (Miles). He does his part every game and makes it easier for us on the offensive end. We just have three defenders so he does a tremendous job for us in goal.”
Both Mitchell standouts want to play college hockey.
“But first, we have to go through the junior hockey system,” Loes said. “You have to have talent like Wayne Gretzky to go straight from high school to college.”
