First baseman Wally Joyner homers off of Boston Red Sox left-hander Bruce Hurst in the fifth inning of their American League playoff game, Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1986 in Boston. Joyner, a rookie, took over first base from the retired Rod Carew and hit .290 for the season with 22 home runs and 100 RBIs. He was also the first rookie to be voted in as a starter for an MLB All-Star game.
