KEY MOMENT: The score was tied, 2-2, in the fifth inning when Mike Trout, after fouling off three 1-and-2 pitches and taking a ball from right-hander Josh Tomlin, poked an opposite-field, three-run home run off the top of the right-field wall to cap a four-run inning and give the Angels a 5-2 lead.

AT THE PLATE: Trout was the star — he also doubled in the first inning and hit a home run in the seventh — but he had plenty of help. Leadoff man Kole Calhoun tied a career high with four hits — three singles and a home run — scored three runs and drove in two. Howie Kendrick had three hits, including a home run in the sixth and a run-scoring double in the ninth.

ON THE MOUND: An 11-minute rain delay in the middle of the ninth denied Matt Shoemaker a chance to throw his first complete game, but that hardly put a damper on the evening for the right-hander, who threw a career-high eight innings, giving up two runs and five hits, striking out a career-high 10 and walking one in his eighth big league start.

REHAB REPORT: Tyler Skaggs’ return from a right-hamstring strain has been put on a slower track. The left-hander did not throw a scheduled simulated game Tuesday and will instead throw in the bullpen “in the next couple of days,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “He’s feeling good, but not quite enough to do what you need to do in a sim game.” Skaggs will not be activated Saturday, the day he is eligible to come off the disabled list.

EXTRA BASES: Josh Hamilton started at designated hitter, not because of an injury but because he is feeling general soreness as he acclimates to playing every day after sittinig ou two months because of a torn ligament in his left thumb. … The Angels re-signed left-hander Wade LeBlanc, whom they lost to the New York Yankees on a June 3 waiver claim, to a minor league deal. LeBlanc elected free agency after being taken off New York’s 40-man roster.

UP NEXT: Left-hander C.J. Wilson (7-6, 3.50 ERA) will oppose Cleveland right-hander Justin Masterson (4-4, 4.61) at Progressive Field on Wednesday at 4 p.m. PDT. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
