KEY MOMENT: With the score tied, 2-2, and two out in the sixth inning, Collin Cowgill lofted a fly ball into the right-field corner. Phillies outfielder Marlon Byrd raced to the ball and raised his glove for the catch, but the ball somehow landed just beyond his glove, bouncing into the stands for a ground-rule double. That should have been the third out, but the Angels scored seven runs in the inning — five with two out.

AT THE PLATE: Kole Calhoun had two hits as the Angels batted around in the sixth. He led off the inning with a home run, the first run after Phillies starter Jerome Williams had pitched five shutout innings. He also singled home the last run of the inning. Calhoun finished with three hits, including a single in the first inning.

ON THE MOUND: C.J. Wilson (9-8) won for the first time since June 24, giving up two runs in 62/3 innings. Wilson had a 10.13 ERA in two July starts and a 12.86 ERA in two August starts, but Manager Mike Scioscia said before the game the Angels’ lack of depth would provide Wilson with a cushion. “You’re going to make changes when you have better options,” Scioscia said. “Our best chance is for C.J. Wilson to pitch close to his capabilities. That’s what you have to let play out.”

ROSTER NEWS: The Angels recalled outfielder Brennan Boesch from triple-A Salt Lake, where he had set a franchise record by reaching base in 11 consecutive plate appearances, and returned right-hander Caleb Clay to Salt Lake. Boesch started at designated hitter Tuesday, and Scioscia said the Angels would split the DH role among Boesch, Cowgill and Efren Navarro. Clay, 26, who has pitched seven minor league seasons without making a major league appearance, was promoted Sunday but did not pitch in his two days with the Angels.

UP NEXT: The Angels’ Jered Weaver (12-7, 3.68) faces the Phillies’ A.J. Burnett (6-12, 4.29) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Angel Stadium. TV: FS West. Radio: 830, 1330.
