He had a nasty fastball, a quick temper and the resolve to escape the coal mines in his native Lonaconing (Allegany County). Grove carved out a Hall of Fame career with the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox, winning 300 games and two world championships (1929 and 1930). For seven straight years, he led the American League in strikeouts. Nine times, his ERA was best.
