( Baltimore Sun photo by Richard Stacks / April 30, 2012 ) His old maroon letterman's jacket has an "S," for Southern, where Kaline batted .488 as a senior, stole 52 bases in 53 attempts and caught the eye of the Detroit Tigers. Signed in 1953, he went straight to the major leagues where, two years later at 20, he became the youngest player to win a batting crown (.340). In 22 seasons, the Hall of Fame outfielder and 15-time All-Star had 3,007 hits and 399 home runs, and won 10 Gold Gloves. |
