166. Deane Beman, golf

The former Terrapin is <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORSPT000188" title="Maryland Terrapins" href="/topic/sports/college-sports/maryland-terrapins-ORSPT000188.topic">Maryland</a>'s entry in the World Golf Hall of Fame. A savvy putter, Beman won two U.S. Amateur championships, the British Amateur and five <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="15007111" title="PGA Tour" href="/topic/sports/golf/pga-tour-15007111.topic">PGA Tour</a> titles. He competed on four U.S. Walker Cup teams, pairing with <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PESPT005405" title="Jack Nicklaus" href="/topic/sports/jack-nicklaus-PESPT005405.topic">Jack Nicklaus</a> to win the event in 1961. Beman, from Bethesda, later became commissioner of the PGA Tour and a golf-course architect.
