143. Sandy Hawley, horse racing

The first jockey to win 500 races in a year, Hawley did it while riding in Maryland. In December 1973 at <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PLGEO100100615060000" title="Laurel" href="/topic/us/maryland/prince-georges-county/laurel-PLGEO100100615060000.topic">Laurel</a> Race Course,  the 24-year-old Canadian broke <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEHST001837" title="Bill Shoemaker" href="/topic/arts-culture/bill-shoemaker-PEHST001837.topic">Bill Shoemaker</a>'s record of 485 victories, which had stood for 20 years. A week later, on the same track, he won No. 500 and finished the year with 515. The Hall of Famer (6,449 wins) twice won the prestigious D.C. International at Laurel.
