Mike Preston: Harbaugh made wrong call not kicking deep

Ravens

head coach

John Harbaugh

likes to talk about attacking, but he needs to attack with common sense. His decision to try an onside kick trailing 9-7 with 2 minutes and two seconds left in the game, and two timeouts, was a poor one. Instead of attempting the onside kick, he should have allowed one of his top weapons, kicker

, to nail it deep in the endzone. He should have put the pressure on rookie quarterback Baline Gabbert to produce and get a first down. If the Ravens had held, they only needed a field goal to win.

Instead, the Ravens didn't gain possession and they basically put the

in field goal range. Jaguars kicker

Josh Scobee

had already converted on field goals of 54, 54 and 22 yards, and he hit the last one of 51 yards to put Jacksonville ahead, 12-7, with 1 minute and 43 seconds remaining.

It forced the Ravens to score a touchdown with only one timeout remaining.

I understand this philosophy the Ravens have of being aggressive, but the attacking style has to be overruled by common sense. With this Ravens defense, it also is this team's best offense.
