In order to make room for Burnett, who will report to Triple-A Norfolk, on the 40-man roster, the club transferred designated hitter Wilson Betemit to the 60-day disabled list. Betemit suffered a Grade 2/3 PCL tear in his right knee during the final week of spring training.
Burnett, 25, was 4-4 with a 3.52 ERA and 10 holds last season with the Twins, allowing 71 hits over 72 1/3 relief innings.
Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette called Burnett a solid major league pitcher who “can contribute this year and support the major league bullpen.”
Burnett can also give the Orioles some added bullpen depth after the club traded veteran right-handed reliever Luis Ayala earlier this week.
Burnett is 8-11 with a 4.61 ERA in 174 career big league appearances over three seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
He was claimed by the Blue Jays in late March from the Twins and pitched 2 1/2 scoreless innings for Toronto’s Triple-A team in Buffalo before the Jays designated him for assignment two days ago to make room for former Towson standout Casper Wells.
