Major League Lacrosse's Bayhawks, Florida, Denver face off in scrimmage day

April 21, 2014

The Chesapeake Bayhawks hosted three other Major League Lacrosse teams at a scrimmage day Saturday at Severn. The Charlotte Hounds, Denver Outlaws and Florida Launch traveled to the Severna Park private school for one last test before next weekend's season openers. Each team played two three-quarter games. Chesapeake coach Dave Cottle had mixed feelings after watching the Bayhawks defeat Florida, 11-5, and lose to Denver, 8-5. "Right now, I think we are an average team. I didn't see anything out there today that made me think we're a good team at this point, but we'll keep working to get there," Cottle said. The two-time defending champion Bayhawks were without numerous key players, including starting attackman Drew Westervelt (John Carroll, UMBC), top long-stick defensive midfielder Jesse Bernhardt (Maryland) and starting goalkeeper Kip Turner (Severn), as well as high-scoring midfielders Peet Poillon (UMBC) and Joe Walters (Maryland). Westervelt and Walters are among several Bayhawks still playing professionally indoors in the National Lacrosse League. Bernhardt, Turner and Poillon are assistant coaches at Maryland, Brown and Hobart, respectively. Attackman Brendan Mundorf (Mount St. Joseph, UMBC), acquired from Denver in an offseason trade, scored two goals and had three assists in the victory over the Launch. Veteran attackman Ben Rubeor (Loyola High) led all scorers in the Florida game with four goals. Tyler FioritoT.C. DiBartoloBruce Bickford
