Jered Weaver to miss Friday’s start but might return next week

Angels ace Jered Weaver was scratched from Friday night’s start against the Seattle Mariners because of tightness in his forearm, but the team is hopeful the right-hander will return to the mound Wednesday against Oakland.

Right-hander Matt Shoemaker, called up from triple-A Salt Lake on Monday, will start in Weaver’s place. Jerome Williams and C.J. Wilson are expected to pitch Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Weaver, who missed seven weeks in April and May because of a broken left elbow, is 10-8 with a 3.36 earned-run average in 23 games, including Saturday’s six-inning, two-run, six-hit win in Houston, his fifth straight quality start.

But Weaver, in the second year of a five-year, $85-million deal, has had trouble getting loose, and the Angels don’t want him to risk further injury.

Shoemaker went 11-13 with a 4.64 ERA in 29 starts at Salt Lake, with 160 strikeouts, 29 walks and 27 home runs allowed in 184 1/3 innings.
