Matt Dominguez powers Astros past Angels, 7-5

Matt Dominguez had four hits, including a tiebreaking three-run home run, to power the Houston Astros to a 7-5 victory over the Angels.

The Angels lost a series to the Astros -- the worst team in the major leagues -- for the third time this season. The Angels are 7-9 against the Astros, a team on pace to lose 100 games for the third consecutive season.

More important, Angels star Mike Trout left the game after five innings because of what the team said was tightness in his right hamstring.

Trout, who has played in all but one of the Angels’ 123 games, singled and doubled Sunday to lift his batting average to .333. That ranks second in the American League behind Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera, who is batting .360.

Trout has reached base in 40 consecutive games. The club record is 63, set by Orlando Cabrera. The major league record is 84, by Ted Williams.

The Angels’ projected starting outfield this season was Trout in left field, Peter Bourjos in center and Josh Hamilton in right. They finished the game with J.B. Shuck in left, Collin Cowgill in center and Kole Calhoun in right, with the trio occupying the first three spots in batting order, respectively.

Dominguez, who played at Chatsworth High, singled in each of his first two at-bats before snapping a 3-3 tie with a three-run homer off Angels reliever Juan Gutierrez. Dominguez, who has 15 home runs this season, also singled in the ninth inning; the four hits tied a career high.

Gutierrez has a 7.30 earned-run average in 14 appearances since the Angels claimed him on waivers from the Kansas City Royals last month.

Mark Trumbo homered and drove in three runs for the Angels. Trumbo leads the team in home runs (28) and runs batted in (81).

Angels starter Jason Vargas gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
