Rotation is still up in the air

The Angels still have not decided who will fill the rotation spot vacated by Bartolo Colon, who went on the disabled list Tuesday because of irritation in his right elbow.

The most likely options appear to be Kelvim Escobar, who could pitch on regular rest Sunday in the wake of a scheduled off day today, or reliever Dustin Moseley. If Escobar pitched Sunday, the Angels would need another starter Aug. 2 against Oakland at McAfee Coliseum before Escobar could make his next start the following day.

Moseley, who entered Monday’s game in the second inning after Colon departed because of his injury, made two starts in April as an injury replacement and pitched effectively.

Asked whether he would like to rejoin the rotation, Moseley said, “If that’s going to be the best thing for us, absolutely. I’ll help out in any way that I can.”

Another possibility would be to recall Ervin Santana from triple-A Salt Lake, though the Angels would prefer to let the struggling right-hander continue to show improvement in the minor leagues before giving him another shot in the rotation.

“We’re not going to rule anything out yet, but he’s making progress down there and we don’t want to slow that down,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said of Santana, who is scheduled to make his next minor league start Friday.

The Angels could have a better understanding of how much time Colon will miss after his elbow is re-examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum this week.

Oakland designated hitter Mike Piazza said he intended to press charges against a fan who pelted him in the head with a plastic water bottle while he stood in the on-deck circle in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday at Angel Stadium during the Angels’ 7-6 victory.

“It was a gutless move, but what are you going to do?” Piazza said. “Hopefully, he’ll spend the night in jail. ... There’s just no excuse for that. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

The fan initially tried to elude security personnel but was eventually caught and arrested. Sgt. Rick Martinez of the Anaheim Police Department said Roland Flores, 22, of La Puente, was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery and booked at the Anaheim detention facility.

It was the second incident in the series after 45 fans were ejected and two arrested in the wake of a fight in the upper deck Monday.

Scioscia did not include Vladimir Guerrero in his lineup so that the right fielder could have two consecutive days off including today. Guerrero has not homered in 97 at-bats and 24 games, the longest drought of his career.

“It is a home run drought for Vlad, but he’s still been as productive as he could be,” Scioscia said of Guerrero, whose previous longest drought was a 23-game stretch in 1997 during his rookie season with Montreal. “We haven’t been setting the table as much for him, so some of his production numbers have been a little light, but he’s going to be fine.”

Reggie Willits replaced Guerrero in right field and returned to his spot atop the batting order, giving the Angels what Scioscia described as “more of a little-ball look” that produced 15 hits.
