Angels’ Mark Trumbo must clear one more hurdle in recovery

Share

Angels slugger Mark Trumbo, slowed all winter by a stress fracture in his right foot, will undergo a CAT scan on Feb. 28, after which he hopes to be cleared to run.

Trumbo, who reported to camp with pitchers and catchers on Sunday, was diagnosed with the injury in the final week of 2011, a season in which he led the Angels with 29 home runs and 87 runs batted in.

An expected five-month recovery delayed Trumbo’s transition to third base, a position the Angels, who signed first baseman Albert Pujols to a 10-year, $240-million deal in December, hope Trumbo can play at 40-50 games this season.

Trumbo, who played first base last season, has been hitting, fielding grounders and making throws from third for about a month and has not experienced any setbacks. But he still must clear one more hurdle later this month, when he returns to Southern California for tests to determine whether the fracture has healed.

“At that point,” Trumbo said, “I hope to start running and resume full baseball activities.”
