AT THE PLATE: Outfield prospect Yasiel Puig was once again breathtaking, this time in front of a Cactus League-record crowd of 13,721 fans. Puig was three for three with a double and raised his spring average to .547 — higher than Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier’s averages combined. Entering the game as a fourth-inning replacement for Carl Crawford, the 22-year-old Cuban defector stretched a single to left-center into a double in his first at-bat. He started the Dodgers’ six-run rally in the seventh inning with a broken-bat single to right. He went from first to third on an errant pickoff throw and eventually scored on a bases-clearing double by Ethier. In his second at-bat of the inning, Puig singled to left.

ON THE MOUND: South Korean rookie Hyun-Jin Ryu held the White Sox to two runs and one hit over seven innings in the longest start made by any Dodgers pitcher this spring. Ryu retired the last 11 batters he faced and 17 of the last 18. “Everything is coming according to plan,” Ryu said of his gradual improvement in the spring. Ryu also collected his first hit, a single to right field off Jake Peavy. The hit was Ryu’s first since high school. “It was against a former Cy Young Award winner, so I was excited,” he said. Ryu is in line to pitch the second game of the regular season, on April 2. However, Chad Billingsley is expected to pitch that game if he is healthy, meaning Ryu could be skipped the first time through the rotation.

EXTRA BASES: A day after undergoing thumb surgery, Hanley Ramirez visited the Dodgers spring-training facility. Ramirez was scheduled to return to his off-season home in Miami. He is expected to rejoin the Dodgers in Los Angeles when they break camp. Though Ramirez’s thumb will be immobilized for three weeks, Manager Don Mattingly said he should be able to start working out soon.
