Dodgers’ bullpen struggling in spring-training games

PHOENIX — The Dodgers’ bullpen, expected to be a strength, has struggled in Cactus League play.

Brian Wilson and Brandon League — former All-Star closers — gave up four runs and got just three outs Monday as the Dodgers surrendered a lead in the eighth inning or later for the third time in six games.

For Wilson, the runs were the first he has given up this spring. But League has given up four hits, four walks and five runs in 22/3 innings and the club’s top seven relievers have a combined earned-run average of 4.07.

“Obviously we’re not happy with the results,” Dodgers Coach Don Mattingly said of League. “I’m sure Brandon’s not happy with the results. You’ve got to continue to get better and get the ball where you want to get it.”

League’s struggles could open the door for Rule 5 draft pick Seth Rosin, who hasn’t given up an earned run in eight innings, striking out 10. If Rosin doesn’t make the Dodgers roster, the team must offer him back to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Flight plan

The Dodgers had a closed-door clubhouse meeting during which Scott Akasaki, the director of team travel, and Stan Conte, the vice president for medical services, explained how to cope with jet lag and the time changes that will come with Sunday night’s 17-hour flight to Australia.

“I think it’s kind of new territory for everybody,” said pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who will start the March 22 season opener in Sydney.

Kershaw may be better prepared than most Dodgers, though. He and his wife, Ellen, have made two off-season trips to Africa, where they do extensive charity work.

“I’ve been on some long flights before,” he said. “I kind of know how your body reacts. … But I’ve never had to try to compete. I’ve never had to try to pitch. Everybody’s got to do it, so there’s really no excuses.”

Roster moves

The Dodgers optioned right-hander Matt Magill to the minors and reassigned four non-roster players to the minors: catcher J.C. Boscan, pitcher Carlos Frias and infielders Brendan Harris and Clint Robinson.
